(Adventures in Building a Brand)
Yesterday I made a batch of whipped body butter. It had mostly organic, fair-trade ingredients and the essential oils were safe for use during pregnancy. Score, right?
Wellll, the recipe that I used called for cocoa butter. I bought unrefined cocoa butter thinking that unrefined = less processing = better for my body. But, this cocoa butter smelled like CHOCOLATE. Not sweet, sugary, Hershey's or Toblerone chocolate but DAMNTHAT'SSOMESTRONGCHOCOLATE.
My house was filled with the aromas of tangerine, rose, vanilla and grapefruit as I mixed my essential oil blends, but slowly, the smell of DAMNTHAT'SSOMESTRONGCHOCOLATE overpowered all. It was so strong that it could have even covered the smell of a stanky fart (I'm assuming... I try not to fart while I'm making products). The butter totally overpowered my delicate, lovely, airy, fruity, floral blends of essential oils, almost completely masking them. Did I mention that the chocolate smell was strong? (Squid even gave me some WHOANELLY kicks after a while. It may have been that my little bump now rests at exactly counter height and he didn't appreciate me leaning against it. Boys... who knows? *rolls eyes*)
[Oh hey, Spelling-bee Champion over here.. That should be "reeks"...
-- it was midnight, gimmie a break!]
After measuring and melting and cooling and whipping the butter, it had the MOST fluffy, delicious texture. I smeared it on my hands and rubbed it in in hope that the DAMNTHAT'SSOMESTRONGCHOCOLATE scent would fade, but alas, it didn't. It smelled like I rolled around in dark chocolate ganache, smears and trails of the glaze dripping down my arms. I WANTED so badly to love the way that it smelled because the texture was like frosting and it made my skin feel like a new born bunny's rump, but I just couldn't get over the strength of the cocoa butter.
So now, it's time to re-formulate!
